In this week’s episode, Jesse sat down with Casey Bolduc of ACE Solar to discuss the impact of strategic communication, the importance of explaining the “why” behind decisions, and the difference in communications in different instructs.
Five key takeaway from Casey Bolduc on Happeo Unmuted:
- Corporate vs. Construction Communications
Casey contrasted his past life in financial services—where communication was rigid and highly structured—with his current role in construction, where communication was much more ad hoc. His biggest challenge was introducing formal communication strategies into an industry that hadn’t historically valued them, while still respecting the existing culture.
- The Hardest Part of Internal Comms: Getting Buy-In
Casey pointed out that “everyone communicates,” but few people think about doing it strategically. The hardest part isn’t writing a message—it’s convincing people that communication itself is a skill worth practicing and that intentional messaging benefits the whole organization.
- Small Changes, Big Impact: Formal Conversations About Comms
One of the most impactful shifts Casey made was simply carving out space for formal discussions about communication. Even though conversations happen naturally, reframing them as intentional—asking “when, where, and how” to communicate—has had an outsized effect on clarity and alignment at Ace Solar.
- AI in Knowledge Sharing: Helpful but Needs Guardrails
Casey sees AI as a powerful enabler for internal comms, especially in knowledge search. He praised tools like Happeo’s Smart Search for surfacing files despite different naming conventions and phrasing. But he stressed that AI outputs must stay grounded in human context—otherwise, they risk feeling disconnected from the realities of how teams actually talk and work.
- A Mindset of Lifelong Learning & Enabling Others
Casey lives by the principle of “learn something every day, and help someone else learn something every day.” A standout story: teaching his 85-year-old grandmother to use voice-to-text so she could pursue her dream of blogging. That small act of enablement unlocked a half-finished novel within a week—showing how communication tools, when thoughtfully applied, can empower anyone.
